What is The Motability Scheme?

Motability is a government-funded scheme designed to allow disabled people and their families greater autonomy in their personal transport. Utilising the Mobility Allowance benefit, customers of the scheme are able to purchase a modified vehicle from a specialist dealership at a reduced cost. The programme has been running since 1978, and since that time has provided more than three and a half million cars to disabled customers across the country.

Eligibility for the scheme is dependent on the type of Mobility Allowance the customer receives. If you are currently in receipt of one of the list of approved benefits, with at least 12 months' award length left, you may well qualify for the scheme – see our 'Eligibility' page for full details.

The Government has begun to replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for disabled people aged between 16 and 64. This process began in Northern Ireland from 20 June 2016. If you are awarded the Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of PIP, you will continue to be able to lease a car, scooter or powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme.

There are myriad advantages to going through Motability for your next vehicle lease. These include comprehensive insurance coverage, maintenance and selected additional mobility adaptations at no extra cost. What's more, if you wish to continue with the programme you will automatically receive a new vehicle every three years.

How the Motability  Scheme Works

The Higher Rate Mobility Component of the Disability Living Allowance, the Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment, the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or the Armed Forces Independence Payment, is transferred to Motability as the lease payment for a car, scooter or powered wheelchair. The Motability Scheme offers a range of over 2,000 models including over 500 cars available for no further cost, although customers who choose a larger model may need to pay an additional Advance Payment. A family member, carer or friend who lives within five miles of the disabled customer can drive the car on a customer’s behalf if they do not drive.

There is a wide range of cars to choose from, including models from all major manufacturers. There are also Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles and drive-from wheelchair options. If required, a selection of popular adaptations may be included at no extra cost and there is also a choice of automatic options available.

Motability Scheme Northern Ireland

Benefits Of The Motability Scheme

The Motability scheme represents numerous advantages for those who qualify. If you meet the eligibility criteria for the programme and are considering investing in a new vehicle, there are several reasons to choose Motability to meet your needs.

Firstly, many of the adaptations under the scheme are carried out free of charge, and when it comes to maintenance, tyres, windows and windscreens will all be replaced at no extra cost. This allows customers the peace of mind that the initial purchasing and subsequent maintenance costs of their vehicle will be manageable.

Whether you drive yourself or nominate up to two drivers on your behalf, the scheme also offers generous insurance coverage – equivalent to a comprehensive policy. Year-round, 24-hour breakdown coverage is also provided by the RAC, who run a Motability Assist helpline. What's more, if you choose to leave the scheme, confirmation of your claims history is available on request.

Mileage over the three-year period is generous, with up to 60,000-miles’ allowance (with a charge of five pence for every mile over the limit). In addition, when you lease a car through Motability, you automatically qualify to receive a brand-new car every three years. A Motability specialist will contact you a few months before the end of your current contract, detailing your vehicle choices for your next contract, and allowing you the freedom of choice to decide whether you want to continue with the scheme.

One of the main benefits of Motability, aside from the superb value it represents, is the level of support offered by specialist teams, who will be on hand to guide you through the process of choosing and adapting a vehicle. In addition, Motability staff will organise road tax on your behalf.

Donnelly Group is the leading provider of Motability offers across Northern Ireland. For full details of how the scheme can benefit you, give us a call, enquire online or visit us in person and speak to a member of the Motability team.

What is Personal Independence Payment (PIP)?

The Government are replacing the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) with Personal Independence Payments (PIPs) for disabled people aged between 16 and 64. This process began in April 2013 in Great Britain and in Northern Ireland in June 2016.

PIPs focus on how a person’s disability affects their ability to plan and undertake a journey independently. It’s about what people can do rather than the nature of their disability.

To receive the enhanced rate of PIP and to be eligible to join the Scheme someone needs to get at least 12 points either through the mobility component or planning or making a journey.

Adaptations

Donnelly Group offer a range of adaptions designed to help driving or travelling easier. Many of the adaptions available are at no extra cost, if fitted at the start of your lease.

Adaptions fall into three categorises ;

1. Driving Adaptions - To help you drive

2. Stowage Adaptions - To help you stow your wheelchair or scooter

3. Access Adaptions - To help you get in and out of your car

It is important to note that not all adaptions are suitable for every type of car, so it is important to work out what adaptions you require before you decide on your choice of car. If you are not sure or would like any advise on this, our Donnelly Group Motability Specalist Team are here to help.
