What is a BEV?

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) are fully electric with rechargeable batteries and no petrol engine. These cars rely solely on the electricity stored within the BEV battery pack of the vehicle to run the motor to drive and power all the electronics onboard, such as your headlights, DAB radio, and satellite navigation. Battery EVs are sometimes referred to as All-Electric or Fully Electric cars. If this is your first time considering a move to electric, we recommend reading our Ultimate Guide To Electric Vehicles.

What are the benefits of a battery electric vehicle?

We all know that electric vehicles offer a host of benefits over petrol & diesel counterparts, be that lower running costs, convenient driving, less maintenance, government grants & being better for the environment!

BEVs are a great choice if you’re looking for an electric vehicle that can hold charge well, & are suitable for short to medium trips (up to the 250-mile range). Depending on how you can charge a vehicle at home, it is worth weighing up if you should go for a BEV or consider a mild hybrid vehicle.

What should I look for when buying a BEV electric car?

One of the most important things to consider when purchasing a BEV or any electric car is what you will be using it for.

If you need it for driving around the country for work, where you’re taking short-medium journeys that add up throughout the day, you might recommend a hybrid. A small electric car should be in your sights if it's exclusively for short journeys.

Whatever electric car you’re going for, you need it to fit well with your lifestyle – consider a few of the following things:

  • How much you’ll be travelling - Most of the electric vehicles on the market now will handle weekly commutes on a single charge, but if you need it to go that bit further or regularly take long trips, it’s worth considering a model with a longer range such as the Jaguar I-Pace with a 292-mile range, or Renault ZOE with a 245-mile range.
  • How you’ll charge up - Most of the time, it might be cheaper to charge your car overnight at your home. However, if that’s not an option, ensure you have a secure location near your home to charge your vehicle. Sometimes, charging at public points is free for a short stay. Find
  • How you drive- Similar to petrol and diesel cars, how you drive will affect the amount of electricity you use. Slow, smooth driving maximises your range, while high speeds and heavy braking will drain it quicker.
  • What your family needs from the car – There are a lot more family battery EVs coming to the market. Recent examples like the Peugeot e-2008 SUV and VW ID.4 SUV are proving that EVs are suited to family life.

What is it like to drive an electric car?

Because EVs are highly responsive and create less noise & vibrations, they’re smooth and effortless to drive. For some drivers, that takes a little getting used to.
