Suzuki has recently launched its all-new SX4 S-Cross continuing its historic grip on the 4X4 market. More compact than the workhorse all-wheel drive models, the S-Cross is billed as a Crossover combining hatchback characteristics with SUV attributes.
The model is available with a choice of two 1.6 litre engines, one petrol and one diesel, both offering their respective appeals. The petrol engine powers a 4-way choice of 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive variants with either a manual gearbox or CVT continuously variable transmission.
Its 120 PS engine is good for a 0-62 mph time of 11 seconds and a top speed of 111 mph, in both cases the manual showing a marginal advantage over the CVT equipped version.
Despite a predominant diesel association with this type of vehicle, a petrol engine offers a refreshing alternative with a lighter and more progressive throttle response stretching to higher revs. The petrol option would particularly appeal to those opting for the 2-wheel drive version, with its competitive price of just £14,999.
However, the high mileage user will be attracted to the diesel range and while this is also available in 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive, the CVT option is only available on the petrol models. The 1.6 litre DDiS diesel engine also produces 120 PS but with 320 Nm of torque available from 1,750 rpm providing both power and flexibility through its 6-speed manual gearbox.
This provides the benchmark acceleration time from rest to 62 mph (100km/h) of 12.0 seconds and a similar top speed to that of the petrol models.
